Bainesse School Profile

Bainesse is a small rural community situated 20km from Palmerston North on the highway leading to the West Coast. The area is within easy travelling distance of:

Predominant land use is Dairy Farming. There is an increasing number of lifestyle blocks being developed in the area. The majority of the population comprises farmers, share milkers and farm workers. There are also a number of people who work in Palmerston North, Foxton or Levin. Changing farm technology means less staff are required resulting in more rental properties becoming available. As a consequence, there are a number of solo parents and families coming out from the urban areas in search of cheaper accommodation. The school has a relatively high turnover of children because of these families.

The community is predominantly European. The majority of Maori are from either Rangitane or Raukawa. A copy of their rich and fascinating history can be found in the school library.

Bainesse School is a living and surviving example of modern history of the district. It was an important part of a once thriving, but still strong, community for the past 90 years. Nowadays the school, the slide, the tennis/netball court and swimming pool are the landmarks defining Bainesse. Consequently the school has become the districts sense of identity and is also used for social occasions and public meetings. Local families feel strongly there is a need for the school to remain the hub of the community.

Bainesse is a rural, state, full primary school. A brief history of the school follows:

We have murals decorating parts of the school depicting our heritage from 1913 to now.

The school has been a two-teacher school for a number of years. Traditionally the school has been divided into two classes:

The support staff include a teacher aide, a principal release teacher, a school secretary, a cleaner and several members of the school community who have taken on various grounds maintenance responsibilities.

As this is a multi-level school, it has always been important to the teaching staff to ensure that the older, more mature children do not overshadow the younger children. A multi-level school has advantages in that there are always opportunities for older students to help the younger ones in a variety of ways. Being good role models and sharing leadership qualities are important characteristics, which are fostered and encouraged in this school.

We have a dedicated reading recovery room, separate from the main building. All buildings are alarmed and monitored.

Bainesse School has an active Board Of Trustees with 5 elected members, 1 Staff Representative and the Principal. The Board Of Trustees work hard to ensure the smooth governance of the school.
